There once was a time when all of the animals spoke the same language, and they had rules that they would follow to maintain peace and to keep order in their land. One day, in a vast and prosperous forest, there came a lone wolf who began to disrupt this order. The wolf would kill any who crossed his path, regardless of whether or not he was hungry or provoked. The smaller animals all gathered for a meeting to discuss what was to be done about wolf (for the larger animals like bear could not be bothered). “Someone has to do something!” cried the deer, who had organized the meeting, “the woods have become dangerous, and the air smells of rot from the meat the wolf wastes!” “But the wolf is dangerous,” says the little, tawny owl, “he has sharp teeth and claws; and he’s quick and strong. Bibliography: "The Destiny of Sun Wu Kung" from "The Ape Sun Wu Kung" in The Chinese Fairy Book  translated by Frederick H. Martens. Source .  Notes: The Buddha is always a good time Who doesn't enjoy a cameo from the Buddha? The answer to that is probably Christians Or Hindus Depending on when and where and who you ask But the Buddha seems like a fun guy; ascending to deific status and all that What I'm saying is I would enjoy writing the Buddha interacting with the Monkey King. The proud and defiant Sun Wu Kong finally meeting someone he couldn't best. (Image Information: Sun Wu Kang and Buddha by Bi Heng; Wikimedia Commons ) -A.

Reading Notes: Sun Wu Kung, Part A

Bibliography: "The Nether World" from "The Ape Sun Wu Kung" in The Chinese Fairy Book  translated by Frederick H. Martens. Source .  Notes: Even though this story is likely older than most of the underworld stories I have heard before, it feels like it is subverting the tropes of a hero journeying into the underworld. Sun Wu Kung is brought there and then immediately escapes and erases the names of the monkeys of the mountains maybe if I retell this one I will change a little make this Sun Wu Kung's idea like, his monkey subjects also want immortality, but they cannot learn it like Sun Wu Kong can so Sun Wu Kong goes to the underworld to erase their names maybe he fights a demon while there as well (Image Information: Sun Wu Kong Lantern Display by Choo Yut Shing at Flickr ) -A.
